NINTH LIFE EXCLUSIVE: GATORS @ BOBCATS

Eric Schleicher paints the Bobcat end zone while the team practices before its homecoming game against Lake Marion on Thursday.

The end zone paint was still wet and the national anthem hung heavy in the even wetter Bluffton afternoon sky.

Everywhere you turned, on this, the eve of homecoming, the evidence of burgeoning tradition at Bluffton High School was, well, evident.

If you ask Bobcat head coach Ken Cribb, however, the program’s newfound tradition took root months ago.

Monday’s Class 3A-7 region-opener against Lake Marion High School will be just the second chance the entire Bluffton community gets a chance to see it.

“We’ve been trying to build a tradition of winning, first and foremost,” Cribb said, adding that the pomp and circumstances of homecoming, while at times exciting, can often serve as a distraction to the task at hand.

The Bobcats have had few distractions throughout the non-conference schedule, beating all comers to tie a program record with five wins.

Lake Marion (3-2) will do its best to deny the Bobcats win number six. The Gators have won two straight games and have outscored its opponents 120-95 on the season.

Bluffton, conversely, boasts the third-highest scoring offense in the Class 3A with 195 points.

The Bobcats have accomplished such a feat despite having a different leading rusher in four of its five games.

Tonight, however, the Bobcats will be as close to 100 percent since their first game — a 39-0 drubbing of rival Hilton Head Island High School.

Back in the lineup tonight will be Desmond Jenkins and Eric Boyles, who combined for 425 yards.

Jenkins and Boyles tied the Bobcats’ program record for single-game touchdowns (three) on consecutive weeks respectively, before each of them was hobbled by ankle injuries.

Neither will be 100 percent tonight, Cribb said, but both should figure into the offense that has been carried by Zach Scott (524 yards) and C.J. Johnson (343) in their absence.

Also solidifying an already electric offense is the quarterback duo of Corey Stoner and C.J. Frazier, who returned to the Bobcat lineup two weeks ago against Wade Hampton. Cribb wouldn’t confirm which player would be under center to start tonight’s game.

Bluffton Stadium will have a different feel tonight as fans watch new traditions sprout their roots.

With an arsenal of four running backs and a steadfast defense that’s yielded just seven second-half points all season, some will argue that the new era of Bobcat football is already well underway.
